REFLECTIONS ON STUDYING IN THE USA FOR THE FIRST TIME

Coming to the USA was one of my goals, as I wanted to experience being taught in a new environment and have the opportunity to study and play the sport I love passionately; football. Throughout my undergraduate degree Psychology, I have refined numerous skills that were relevant to my current completed second degree: Sport’s Management.  My degree has enabled me to develop my skills in research, critical reading and note-taking skills. Furthermore, through various coursework and assignments, I have developed on my writing skills. I am able to write critically, from different perspectives, argue and analyze sets of data.

The experience I gained at Ohio Valley University (OVU) has helped me to improve my professional skills. I am able to develop my leadership and decision making abilities, obtain additional job skills that I believe will open the doors to more employment opportunities.  Majoring is Sports Management at OVU has brought out the best in me, because the programs offered suited the way I was used to working.

The information taught at OVU I believe will be the key to achieving my future goals. The different courses being taught has enabled me to achieve my goals and gain better knowledge and foundation in strategic management, legal issues, sales and marketing, facility planning, risk management, and financial aspects of support. I have various ideas of the jobs I am targeting.

Football plays a huge part in my life. Therefore being able to play the sport I love on the Women’s football team whilst studying was a great experience at OVU.  This is one of the core reasons I chose OVU. Playing with the university team has helped me in building my technical, tactical, physical, and psychological skills. This has enabled me to stay in shape and increase my adrenaline and physical performance. Being a part of an American Football team has given me a chance to improve on my team building experience internationally. Having a Sports management degree has enabled me to turn my passion for sports into a profitable career. Having a Sports management degree has also enabled me to develop skills which will allow me to successfully deal with matters, such as budgeting, leadership skills, ethics, finance, and development.

Academically, I have had good work ethics at the school. For example the school had all the necessary equipment as well as academic resources and that have helped with making the process easier for me being there. One of the strengths of the school is that I could get support whenever needed and asked for help. A teacher was always available in class and out of class.

Additionally, I was fortunate to have been given the opportunity to complete my Bachelors of Science: Sports Management in two years, instead of four. This was because of my credits from my previous degree that interlinked with the degree I am doing now. Therefore my time at the school has been short. The beginning of my time at the school I found it hard first getting immediate answers when I was having difficulty with something. At the end of the year and beginning of my final year I began to adjust to work with the system. I learnt that everyday assignments are given and that exams are expected in each class every other week. I became flexible and educated on my own in my own pace.

Furthermore, I have obtained plentiful strengths whilst being there. My major strengths are time management skills which are excellent. I am very punctual; attend all my classes. I am independent, and a good listener; I have a desire to learn and want to improve. In particular the process of learning, rather than the outcome is important to me. I am organized, and efficient. I am optimistic; having courage and hope in all my goals. This therefore means I am open minded. I am also creative; I like to think of new ways to do things. I have interpersonal skills; such as accountant, the use of analytical skills such as using Microsoft Excel, and written and verbal skills.  I am also a team player and I have demonstrated this on my course through group work such as group presentations.

The challenges I faced, was online classes that I took. In the long run it helped me become independent; I solved problems on my own and developed more critical thinking skills. At times I found classes a little frustrating (because teachers were working too fast), and others loads of fun. All the classes which I undertook have impacted me. But the most beneficial to me would be: business marketing, business communications, anatomy and physiology, kinesiology and personal and community health. These have all been very relevant in the job industry I want to go to and I will absolutely need to know.

Furthermore, my past experiences have helped me solidify my passion for working with the public. Combined with my work experience and my completed degrees, continuing my education and earning another degree has allowed me to increase my knowledge and skills, and sharpen my interpersonal skills. The experience has helped me to improve my professional skills. I have also been able to develop my leadership and decision making abilities, obtain additional job skills and will open the door to many opportunities.

Overall I enjoyed my university experience in OVU. I have been one of the fortunate ones to experience working in a very warm, kind, and friendly environment. I really loved my time. I have taken in a lot and have enjoyed my time and experience. I have made many friends. I feel many opened doors have been open for me, not just in developing my faith in Christ but I have learned what being in a business is really all about.
